Volunteer Opportunities - Boards & Commissions

  • The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority has one (1) opening for a board member. The Authority is responsible for providing recommendations to City Council on projects and economic development incentives for the development or redevelopment of sites with environmental contamination or sites determined to be functionally obsolete under the State’s Brownfield Act and City policies and ordinances. The Authority meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 11:30pm on an as needed basis.  Must be a City resident.
  • The Community Development Committee has one (1) opening for an individual interested in providing citizen input and oversight of the Community Development Block Grant Entitlement (CDBG) funding received by the City. The Committee provides recommendations to City Council on uses for the annual allocations as well as policies relating to CDBG-funded programs. The Committee meets on Thursdays at 7:00am on an as needed basis.
  • The Compensation Commission has one (1) opening for a board member. The Commission is charged with making determinations and recommendations on the salaries for all City of Holland elected officials. Meetings are held in odd-numbered years in May. City residency is required.
  • The Human Relations Commission has one (1) opening for a board member interested in providing counsel and advice to City Council on equal rights and opportunities affecting all Holland citizens as well as promoting social and cultural understanding by discouraging and preventing discrimination, conducting studies and investigations and other activities that improve relationships among all citizens, protecting their equal rights in housing, education, employment and public services. The Commission meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:00pm. City resident is required for appointment.
  • The International Relations Commission has one (1) opening for a board member. The IRC is responsible for promoting international and cross-cultural knowledge, awareness, understanding and sensitivity through interactions within the community and across borders. The Commission is heavily involved in the City of Holland’s Sister City relationships. Meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of each month at 4:30pm.
  • Three (3) community at-large members are being sought to serve on the newly-formed Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC). The NAC has been charged with actively reviewing and evaluating neighborhood improvement programs and initiatives through community input and study, using the 2010 City of Holland Neighborhood Improvement Strategy as a framework. The Committee will advice and recommend to City Council policy, program and other changes as it relates to the City’s Neighborhood Improvement Strategy.  Interested individuals must be City residents. Meeting schedule to be determined, although it is anticipated that the committee will meet monthly.  Term will be three years.
  • The Planning Commission has one (1) opening for an individual to assist in the planning of the physical development of the City, including planning for new or changing land uses, recommending zoning ordinance and map changes, reviewing and approving subdivisions and site plans as well as advising on other aspects of the physical environment. The Commission meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month at 4:00pm for a study session and 5:00pm for a public hearing. Must be a City resident.
  • The Zoning Board of Appeals has an one (1) opening for an alternate member. Alternate members stand in for regular board members who must be absent from a regular meeting to insure a quorum is maintained. The Zoning Board of Appeals is responsible for hearing requests for variances from the zoning ordinance or other types of requests as described by the ordinance. The Zoning Board meets on the 4th Thursday of each month at 5:00pm for a study session followed by a 6:00pm regular meeting. Must be a City resident and, training is provided.
